New Column: The Westboro Baptist Church: Forcing parents to explain homophobia

Y’all! It’s that time of week again! My new So Here’s the Thing column is up and running at the Washington Times Communities site. This week I’m grouchy that the Westboro Baptist freaks make parents explain homophobia. I also talk about a crush I had on Christian Slater when I was 15.

I know there are people out there who think homosexuality is a sin or they think it’s a choice. I’m not gonna go there on the sin question because I’m not qualified to address that, seeing as I’m not a deity. But the choice thing? I don’t buy it. If it was a choice, then I would have had to choose heterosexuality at some point in my development and I never made that choice. It was innate, which is why, at the age of 15, the first time I saw Christian Slater in a movie, my reaction was “WANT!”. Whereas my reaction to Winona Ryder in the same movie was “She gets to make out with Christian Slater. JEALOUS!”. I’m pretty sure some of the gay guys I knew had the exact same reaction to that movie and their reaction was just as innate as mine. None of up sat down and reasoned out where we fell on the Winona Ryder/Christian Slater Attraction Matrix.

Check out the rest at the Washington Times Communities!

I had the exact same Christian Slater crush which required purchasing several issues of Teen Beat. Sad but true… I never even spared a thought for Winona or Samantha Mathis. Very good point on the choice issue.
I have never understood why no one has ever staged mass protests on the street where the Westboro folks live in Topeka. It is my understanding that the whole family owns several houses on the same block and this sounds like a great place to protest them and their antics as far as I am concerned. I live near Topeka and I am on board if anyone else wants to join me. 🙂

I normally lurk but these people make me livid so I had to share what one person I know is doing about it.
One of the dj’s in my area has actually started organizing protests against Westboro and it’s gaining quite a bit of momentum – here’s a link to their site – http://www.journey4justice.com/

When I initially commented I appear to have clicked the -Notify me when new comments are added- checkbox and from now on whenever a comment is added I receive four emails with the same comment. There has to be a way you are able to remove me from that service? Thanks a lot!
